Eligibility Criteria for Getty Multicultural Undergraduate Intern Candidates

Internships are intended for members of groups underrepresented in professions related to museums and the visual arts, including, but not limited to, individuals of African American, Asian, Latino/Hispanic, Native American, and Pacific Islander descent. Intern candidates are not required to have demonstrated a previous commitment to the visual arts.  

You must be a currently enrolled undergraduate and have completed at least one semester of college by June 2018. Students graduating in May or June 2018 are also eligible. (Students who are enrolled in a second BA or BS program are not eligible). You must be a resident of or attend college in Los Angeles County. 

The Curatorial Intern works closely with the Associate Curator & Publications Manager and the Assistant Curator to develop and execute exhibitions and diverse public programming that makes the Broad collection of contemporary art accessible to the widest possible audience.  The intern conducts art historical research for upcoming exhibitions, supports ongoing Permanent Collection curatorial projects, and gains experience with The Broad’s collections database.

The Curatorial Intern supports The Broad’s upcoming and future exhibitions through research, writing, organizational, and collections database tasks, and other duties assigned. Research tasks include compiling bibliographies, collecting articles, and presenting chronological overviews of artists’ work.

Working closely with museum staff across multiple departments, the Curatorial Intern will play an active role in the museum’s exhibitions and related programming.  The Curatorial Intern will also provide administrative support to the Curatorial team as needed.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Carry out preliminary research for future exhibition related programming including building bibliographies, collecting articles, and presenting overviews of artists work in chronological order
  • Observe exhibition installation and provide support during opening events for The Broad’s summer exhibition
  • Compile bibliography research in The Broad’s collections database
  • Assist with insurance values auction research
  • Conduct research and assist with preliminary production and editing for upcoming publications
  • Research and draft staff updates on upcoming permanent collection artwork rotations
  • Assist with organization of curatorial model and exhibition planning meetings
  • Learn basic training of collections database
  • Provide additional day-of staffing support for Broad programs
  • Assist Curatorial team with administrative tasks as needed
  • Present on work completed throughout internship
  • Other duties as assigned

 The Curatorial intern will learn the foundational skills necessary to understand the roles of curating within a contemporary art museum, along with gaining an understanding of how public programming and exhibitions work together to shape and enhance visitor experiences. The Curatorial intern will gain a first-hand education on The Broad’s collections database, gain experience in art historical research and exhibition planning, and be involved in the development and implementation of programs and exhibitions.  The Curatorial intern will support exhibition installation and opening events for The Broad’s summer exhibition. The internship will also include an opportunity to meet with various members of The Broad staff, to gain a holistic understanding of how the museum operates.


The Getty Multicultural internship is for 10 consecutive weeks between June 4 and August 24, 2018.  This is a full-time (40 hours/week) internship.  The typical schedule will be 9am to 6pm Monday through Friday, however some evening and weekend work may also be required.


The intern will receive a $5,500 stipend for the 10-week internship.
